The Days Between: From the Mid-Summer Classic to Cooperstown

Deadheads know “The Days Between” as a phrase that honors Jerry Garcia—a time to reflect on the memories we make and the legacy we leave behind.

Every July, baseball has its own Days Between. The All-Star Game celebrates the game’s brightest stars of today. Just days later, Cooperstown celebrates the legends whose greatness has stood the test of time.

The 2026 All Star Game in Philadelphia was fantastic. Sitting at the game with my friends from the Baseball Hall of Fame was one for the books! Click on the picture below to read my story on the All Star game.

In between, baseball takes a breath. The conversation shifts from batting averages and playoff races to legacy, character, and the stories that connect generations of fans.

For those making the pilgrimage to Cooperstown, these days feel different. Main Street fills with jerseys from every era, collectors unpack treasured memorabilia, and baseball fans from across the country gather for one of the most unique traditions in sports—the National Baseball Hall of Fame Parade.

Watching the parade, I’m reminded of stories from the American frontier. When a legendary lawman, famed scout, or other larger-than-life figure rode into town, people lined the streets just to catch a glimpse of someone whose stories had already become legend. Each year the induction ceremony has its own “flavor.” Last year, with Ichiro and four other greats, the parade was jammed packed. That’s what Cooperstown feels like.

Only these heroes carried bats instead of badges.

 

Children sit on their parents’ shoulders. Adults become kids again, hoping for a wave, a smile, or a brief moment with the players who filled baseball cards, inspired backyard games, and became part of our lives. For one weekend, baseball’s legends aren’t distant names in record books—they’re right there on Main Street, reminding us why we fell in love with the game in the first place.

Like Garcia’s phrase, baseball’s Days Between remind us that life isn’t measured only by the milestones. It’s also measured by the moments that connect them.

By Monday, the pennant races resume, the trade deadline approaches, and the box scores return.

But those who spent The Days Between in Cooperstown leave with something more than memories.

They leave reminded that baseball isn’t just played.

It is passed from one generation to the next.

We should all thank Josh Rawitch, Jason Schiellack and the wonderful Baseball Hall of Fame team for being such effective stewards of the game.
